THE PROBLEM
You're under the rack on one tire. Your shoulder is in a position it's not supposed to be in. You loosen the nut and the bolt head spins inside the tent rail.
The aluminum slider plate stripped.
It happens because the stock plates are soft aluminum. Repeated cycling deforms them. One over-torqued install does it instantly — the stainless hex head rotates through the aluminum ribs and now the plate can't hold the bolt anymore. The constraining feature is gone. The bolt spins free. You can't tighten it down. You can't loosen it off. You're stuck.
If you've ever stripped a slider, you know exactly what this feels like. The system isn't broken. The tent is fine. The mounts are fine. The cheap aluminum part in the middle of the stack failed.
THE SOLUTION
Replace the soft aluminum slider plates with 304 stainless steel laser-cut square washers. Add stainless steel M8 x 60 mm carriage bolts and flanged lock nuts. The system holds.
Kit includes:
- 304 stainless steel laser-cut square washers (the slider replacement)
- Stainless steel M8 x 60 mm carriage bolts
- Flanged lock nuts
The square neck of the carriage bolt nests inside the square hole of the laser-cut washer. The bolt can't spin. High-torque capacity. No more stripping.
The flanged lock nuts fix the second annoying problem — the loose flat washer that always drops out of your fingers right before you thread the nut on. The washer is built into the nut. One part instead of two.
What's not included: the metal mounting strap (flat bar). Re-use yours.
When to Buy This
If you remove or lock your roof top tent regularly, the stock aluminum plates are on borrowed time. Replace them before they strip — or replace them after, when you're trying to figure out how to get the tent off without cutting anything.
This upgraded hardware is included with The Slipstream quick-release mounts and The Gatekeeper locking mount.
