Most Jeep Gladiator truck caps are a rectangle. The Shadow Top's rear curves down toward the tailgate, which does two things at once: it gives the Gladiator a genuinely sleek profile instead of a delivery-van look, and it reduces the flat surface area catching wind at highway speed. You keep every function of a standard GAIA camper shell and lose the boxiness.
The Lid Opens All the Way
Integrated gas struts carry the rear hatch through its full range and hold it open, so loading bulky gear from the top is a one-person job rather than a wrestling match. That matters more than it sounds on a Gladiator, where the 5 foot bed means you are reaching past everything you already loaded. With the hatch up and both side doors down, you have access from three directions at once. No crawling in over your own gear to reach the bag at the bulkhead.
Why Welded Steel Beats Fiberglass
This is the core argument for the Shadow Top over a conventional Jeep Gladiator topper or fiberglass canopy, and it comes down to how the thing is built.
No structural bolts. The body is fully welded. Bolted-together caps develop rattles as fasteners back out over corrugated roads, and every bolt is a potential leak path. Welds do not loosen.
Real security. Fiberglass caves to a determined pry bar. Stainless steel does not. Safety Glass Backed by Steel Bars
The rear window is safety glass with steel security bars mounted on the inside. Glass is always the weak point on any camper shell, and the bars mean breaking it does not get anyone into your gear. Worth having if you leave tools, camera equipment, or recovery gear in the truck at a trailhead or overnight in a city. The bars are bolted in rather than welded, so if you prefer the cleaner look without them they unbolt in a few minutes. Your call, not the factory's.
Pre-Wired LED, Ready for 12V
The internal LED strip runs 9W at 12VDC putting out 900 to 1,000 lumens at 3000K, which is warm white rather than the blue-white glare of cheap strip lighting. It comes pre-wired to a switch mounted in the rear corner by the hatch, so setup is connecting positive and negative to whatever 12V source you run. That means you are not fishing wire through a finished shell at midnight because you needed to find a headlamp. It is also the natural starting point for adding 12V outlets, USB panels, or a full auxiliary battery setup, since the interior panels make wire routing clean.
Side Doors That Double as Tables
Drop the Door, Get a Work Surface
Both side doors are solid steel and lock with keyed latches. When you drop them, a limit chain catches them in a horizontal position, and now you have a work surface on both sides of the truck. Camp kitchen prep, sorting recovery gear, a place to set the stove that is not the dirt. Three-Way Access to the Whole Bed

Two Installation Options, Both Drill-Free
GAIA ships the Shadow Top with mounting hardware for your specific truck, and there are two ways to attach it. Neither requires drilling your Gladiator's bed.
Option 1: Trail Rail Brackets (Standard)
GAIA's L-shaped brackets bolt directly to the Jeep Gladiator Trail Rails using included hardware. Fully drill-free. This is the standard option and the cleanest install if your Gladiator came with Trail Rails.
Option 2: Traditional Topper Clamps
For Gladiators without Trail Rails. You receive standard topper clamps that grip the bed rails. Also completely drill-free, and the right choice if you do not have Trail Rails or simply prefer clamps.

Hard Steel Cap vs Soft Topper
A lot of Gladiator owners weigh the Shadow Top against a soft topper, since the price gap is significant. They solve different problems.
A soft topper or a Fas-Top gives you weather cover for a fraction of the cost, folds down when you need an open bed, and adds almost no weight. What it does not give you is security. Fabric cuts. If your bed contents are camping gear you carry in and out anyway, that may be fine.

About Roof Racks and Rooftop Tents
The Shadow Top is not designed to carry anything on its roof. This is a geometry issue rather than a strength one. The cap is welded steel and structurally stout, but the fastback surface is slanted and curved, so there is no flat plane to mount a rack to and nothing you strap across it will sit securely. We do not recommend mounting a roof rack, a rooftop tent, or cargo on top of the Shadow Top.

Plenty of Shadow Top owners run an awning off the side doors and sleep inside the bed instead, which is a completely valid overland setup and part of why they chose this cap in the first place.
Building Out Your Gladiator Camper Shell
The welded steel body with interior panels is a blank canvas. Unlike fiberglass caps where you are hunting for something solid to mount to, this gives you structure everywhere.
Drawer and Slide Systems
The 21.85 inch interior height works with most popular drawer systems. Decked is a favorite among Gladiator owners since it drops in and gives organized storage below with a flat deck above. TruckVault suits secure tool storage, and Goose Gear plate systems handle modular builds. Installation is independent of the cap mounting, so nothing conflicts. Cargo slides mount to the bed floor and extend out the rear hatch, which opens wide enough to fully extend most slide systems.

Interior Organization and Power
MOLLE panels along the interior walls take tool pouches, water bottle holders, first aid mounts, and recovery gear, and the configuration changes trip to trip. Ceiling mounts and cargo nets use the vertical space for light bulky items like sleeping bags and camp chairs. The welded construction gives you solid mounting points throughout, which is exactly what a fiberglass shell cannot offer.
The pre-wired LED is the natural starting point for electrical. Owners commonly add 12V outlets, USB panels, an auxiliary battery under the shell or integrated with drawers, and an inverter for 110V. The interior panels keep wire routing clean. For ventilation, the operable sliding front window handles most conditions, and for extended sleeping setups people add magnetic window screens or a roof vent fan.

What's Included
Note on the third brake light: current production Shadow Tops do not include a roof-mounted third brake light. The Jeep Gladiator already has one built into the tailgate from the factory, so GAIA removed it from the design. Some older photography still shows it.

Shipping & Delivery
At 225 lbs and roughly the size of a truck bed, the Shadow Top ships by freight rather than parcel. That means a few things worth planning for before you order.
- Freight delivery, not a doorstep drop. A freight carrier will contact you to arrange delivery. This is not a package left on your porch.
- You need a way to get it off the truck. Most freight trucks do not have a lift gate as standard. A commercial address with a forklift or loading dock is the simplest option. Delivery to your nearest freight terminal for pickup is usually the cheaper and easier alternative if you have a trailer or a few friends.
- Plan the install with help. 225 lbs of welded steel is a three or four person lift onto the bed rails, or two people and an engine hoist. Have that sorted before the truck arrives.
- Inspect before you sign. Check the crate for damage at delivery and note anything on the delivery receipt before signing. This is standard freight practice and it protects your claim.

Caring for Your Camper Shell
Powder-coated stainless steel is close to maintenance free, which is much of the point. Unlike a fiberglass canopy that chalks and crazes with age, this finish holds up. Three habits are worth keeping:
- Rinse road salt promptly. Stainless resists corrosion, but salt sitting in seams through a winter is worth avoiding, especially underneath around the mounting points.
- Treat the seals once a season. Clean grit from the rubber seal channels where the cap meets your bed rails and around the doors, then treat with silicone protectant so they stay pliable and keep sealing.
- Re-torque the mounting hardware. The body is welded so nothing structural loosens, but check the brackets or clamps holding the cap to your bed after the first couple of trips, then annually.

How do I maintain the powder coat finish?
Wash it like the rest of the truck with soap and water. The powder coat handles pressure washing, though keep the wand back from the door seals. Rinse road salt off promptly, particularly around the mounting points underneath. Once a season, clean grit from the rubber seal channels and treat them with silicone protectant so they stay pliable. Touch up any powder coat chips promptly so bare metal is not left exposed. How heavy is it and can I install it myself?
The Shadow Top weighs 225 lbs. The mounting itself is straightforward and drill-free, but lifting 225 lbs of welded steel onto your bed rails is a three or four person job, or two people with an engine hoist. Does it come with a third brake light?
No. Current production Shadow Tops do not include a roof-mounted third brake light. GAIA removed it because the Jeep Gladiator already has a third brake light built into the tailgate from the factory, making a second one redundant. Some older product photography still shows the previous design with the light installed.
